Melanoma is a dangerous and aggressive skin cancer. It is important to learn to recognize it, to detect it early and to intervene on the disease at an early stage.

Melanoma can develop in a healthy skin area, but can also be done from a mole. In general, if you realize that a mole has a varying color and edges or has changed shape or color, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist quickly.

Among the skin signs that must attract attention, one must have in mind the meaning of the 4 letters ABCD:

has for asymmetry.
B for edging.
C for color.
D for diameter.
In other words, when a skin lesion becomes asymmetric, or with an irregular border, a color that is not homogeneous, and a diameter that increases, a doctor must be consulted.
Check out our more detailed explanations in the photo gallery below. In particular, there are different forms of melanoma, such as nodular melanoma (5-10% of cases).

Here are some pictures of melanomas that will help you recognize the difference between healthy moles and those that may be "dangerous." And then take the advice of a doctor.

Melanoma is a skin cancer that can be particularly harmful. The main responsibility is an exaggerated exposure to the sun, especially from an early age. Here are some photographs that aim to help you identify what needs to worry you, and help you to make the difference between a simple mole and a black spot that very soon deserves the opinion of a dermatologist.

Not always easy to identify melanoma. When analyzing our moles: The ABCDE rule is a good way mnemonic to remember the signs that must alert. A for asymmetry: B for edges; C for colour; D for diameter; E for Evolution.
In the photo, you can see a Assyémtrie and irregular edges...

In this picture, there are many anomalies, including:
has for asymmetry
You have to be careful when a "mole" has an asymmetrical shape. If a natural mole has a rather round shape, the melanoma is more irregular. It is bigger on one side than on the other.

Other anomaly:
B for edges
The edges of the lesion are not demarcated markedly, sharply (here with an inflammatory red halo). It is important to consult a dermatologist to analyze this  "mole ", make sure it is not a beginner melanoma.

B for edges
The edges of this more important "mole" are irregular. This requires the advice of a doctor.

C for color
In this photo, we observe different colors (a small dark area, another wider area clearer) on the same lesion. It is important to consult because it may be melanoma at an early stage.

At a more advanced stage
C for colour: This lesion has different colors, is not homogeneous.

D for diameter
This "mole" has an increased diameter, usually greater than 6 mm. This lesion is suspicious and should be shown to a dermatologist without waiting.

Other anomaly:
E for Evolution
Of course, if a stain, a lesion on the skin evolves, changes appearance, enlarges... The advice is to consult.

Special case: Nodular melanoma.
A very dark button, black as in the picture should be shown to a dermatologist.

This very black, raised button should definitely be shown to a doctor.
This could be a nodular melanoma (here seen closely).

In this photo, we see different characteristics that can cause skin cancer to be considered, and more specifically a melanoma: asymmetric appearance, irregular edges of the lesion, inhomogeneous appearance...

Everyone should take a dermatological visit to control the condition of its moles: screening is essential in the fight against skin tumors! You have to do it regularly. And in the slightest doubt: consult!
Once a year, in May, the French Dermatology society with the support of the National cancer Instiut, organizes a day of screening for skin cancers. The consultation is free of charge.

Some people need to be particularly vigilant and be screened very regularly. People with a history of melanoma in the near family that have clear skin and hair; That tend to "blush" easily in the sun; Who have exposed themselves much to the sun; Who have had a lot of sunburn in the past; that have a lot of moles.

If good preventative measures were applied against sun exposure, most melanomas could be prevented. Whatever our phototype, it is always important not to expose yourself in the sun between 11 am and 4 pm, to protect yourself with clothes, glasses and hat, and to always use a sunscreen with high protection index to be safe from Dangers of UV.
These tips are even more important to apply in children.
